Super One MSA Series Round 6

Robert Foster-Jones was on top form in the premier KF1 class all weekend, making a clean sweep of timed qualifying, the two heats and both points scoring finals. Defending British champion Mark Litchfield, now on an Alonso kart, his third change of the season, did his best to claim two second places, beating Luke Wright in both finals whilst Elliot Burton endured an exclusion from fourth in the first final for being under the class minimum weight. Burton made it up to fifth in the second final, most of the work done in the early laps, and chased down Richard Bradley. The title favourite Ben Cooper had severe tonsillitis and skipped all the preliminary racing, venturing out only for the first final but then tangled with Jonathan Walker, the latter receiving the black flag. Cooper did not race in the second final, whilst Walker reached sixth. The title fight will go down to the wire at the last round, being held at Fulbeck in Lincolnshire on 17/18th October, with Cooper only needing one third place to sew it up.

With a round to spare, Red Bull backed Alexander Albon provisionally clinched the MSA Junior British Kart title at Larkhall in Scotland with two more dominant wins, unbeaten all weekend. After a brief exchange with Xavier Warburton, Callum Bowyer established himself in second in the first final, whilst Macaulay Walsh roared up to third from eleventh on the grid. Albon’s championship rivals Jake Dennis and Jordan King endured a torrid weekend. Dennis, who has just been crowned vice-champion in the CIK/FIA Junior World Cup, had an early setback with a heat exclusion then became entangled in a start lap accident in the first final. He battled to thirteenth in the second final, his points haul well short of what was needed. King suffered an engine problem and his stout defence of fifth, before he dropped to ninth, earned him a three place penalty. He made seventh in the second final, this time Roy Johnson hit form to leapfrog Bowyer and Walsh for second. A delighted Albon said: “It was just a case of staying focussed.”

Cadet ABkC National Kart Championship

Sam Webster led a close fought first final all the way to the last lap, when Alex Gill slipped past for the win and to claim the provisional 2009 title. The other protagonists in the lead quartet were Matthew Graham and Dean MacDonald, the youngest driver in the series, who nearly took the lead mid-race. Ricky Collard battled to fifth, albeit some five seconds in arrears. Battle re-commenced in the second final, where Gill led the first few laps, Webster having fallen away at the start to sixth before vaulting back to lead, the pair dicing with MacDonald whilst Graham fell back to lead the next group. An exciting last lap had each of the trio nose ahead, before Gill made it stick round the last few corners for his second win.

Congratulations to Alexander Albon and Alex Gill, who have provisionally won this year’s MSA Junior British Kart Championship and the ABkC National Cadet titles respectively, with a round to spare. The penultimate round was held at the Scottish circuit of Larkhall; short, twisty and exciting.

Jordan Chamberlain, still recovering from a collarbone broken at the previous round, dropped back to third at the start, tracked Ollie Morris Jones for a few laps then moved up to second behind his team-mat Shaun Carter. Proving fractionally faster, Chamberlain took the lead with half a dozen laps to run and eked out a small cushion. Morris-Jones was forced to give up his place to Jake Ball with Tom Joyner fifth throughout. David Wagner lost his sixth place with an ignition problem, and would be forced to start the second final from the back. This time Chamberlain made it a lights to flag victory, whilst it was Carter’s turn to fall to third at the start, albeit briefly behind Ball. Wagner made a magnificent recovery to fourth, most of the work being done in the early laps. Chris Lock, who along with Charles Bonsey, had suffered an exclusion in heat two, made it up to fifth.
